Damien Hill

My last 22 years has been working in Rugby Union in Australia with Sydney University, the Brumbies and the Melbourne Rebels, and in Japan with Suntory and most recently Ricoh. Sydney University was already a successful team when I began there in 2006 with strong on field and off field leadership. The challenge was to continue their success. I believe the Leading Teams program helped the continuation of that success with four consecutive Club Championships and First Grade Premierships, as well as providing me with a framework I have endeavoured to follow on and off the field since.

How would you like to be described by your family, friends, and clients?

Knowledgeable – knows his stuff and is prepared to help;
Works hard/resilient/reliable – prepares well, has a thick skin and will stick at it;
Sense of humour – can switch off and loves a laugh; and
Self-aware – a bit of a work in progress this one

What is your favourite piece of advice, or quote, and why?

“Some people want it to happen, some people wish it would happen, others make it happen” Michael Jordan
I gravitate to those who speak less, do more and make things happen. Often this takes courage which is a characteristic I admire.

What does success look like with a client?

Improved performance and being viewed as an enduring, valued business partner. This, and being able to watch new people come into the client’s business, team, and/or environment and observe them notice/acknowledge/get swept away by their culture.

Tell us about your culture and leadership experience?

I was involved in leadership roles from primary school onwards and have been in positions of leadership throughout my career. I’m not exactly sure why, but I think it was a combination early on of being the eldest in my family, loving sport and getting exposed to a lot of very good coaches and leaders, and being at my Dad’s side when he was coaching teams and leading in his workplace, that gave me the confidence to lead.

I’ve learnt that anyone can lead. It doesn’t take a title, just a willingness to walk the talk and the courage to fight for the behaviours you know are right for those around you.

As a coach my purpose was to develop leaders and improve performance of individuals and teams in pursuit of winning. At Leading Teams, our purpose is to help leaders and teams improve through our facilitation in delivering tailored programs to organisations Australia wide. It was this similarity of purpose that has made Leading Teams the latest team for me.
