Tim Ferguson

I began my relationship with the Leading Teams while in senior management at the Gordon Institute of TAFE in Geelong.

I saw firsthand the benefits of the program in my teams and across the organisation. The Gordon became the most successful TAFE commercially in Australia. I began full time employment with Leading Teams in 2012 and I am now a Director of the business.

How would you like to be described by your family, friends, and clients?

I would like to be described as responsible, invested, caring and honest.
Responsible – Making the choice as to how I respond to any situation
Invested – Giving 100% to anything I commit to
Caring – Putting others needs before my own
Honest – Reviewing myself regularly

What is your favourite piece of leadership advice, or quote?

‘Desire is a purer gift than talent’ – Unknown.

I love this quote because it aligns with my belief that anything is possible if you want it badly enough and you are willing to work for it.

What does success look like with a client?

Success for a client ultimately is a higher performing team. This will generally be a greater weight of numbers pulling in one direction for a common cause (Purpose). It means the right behaviours will consistently be rewarded and the less desirable ones will be challenged. Through stronger relationships and adherence to an agreed framework, the group will feel safer in having these conversations and in turn their performance will improve.

Tell us about your culture and leadership experience?

I have led teams at the Victorian Chamber of Commerce, The Gordon Institute of TAFE and I have been elected to the Leadership Team at Leading Teams. I have been a team member in poor cultures (briefly) and great cultures, and I have a very clear understanding of what underlines the difference between the two…quite simply, what leaders are prepared to accept or not.

Leading Teams offers a common sense, evidence-based and practical approach. The model focuses on dynamics rather than mechanics with an emphasis on everyone taking ownership and being accountable for their behaviour at both an individual level and as a part of a team. The Leading Teams model has been very successful with the Senior Executive Team and senior leaders across the region. TQST is now rolling out the model across all teams in the organisation.
