Before joining Leading Teams, Brendan taught and led in eight schools across Victoria during a 40-year career in the Catholic education sector.
It was here Brendan started work with Leading Teams as a client, building the leadership capability of staff groups whilst addressing issues around workplace culture.

How would you like to be described by your family, friends, and clients?

I would like to be described as someone who displays both Strength and Gentleness.
Strength in that …
I have a strong sense of moral purpose.
I use my strong interpersonal skills to positively influence others.
I am determined.
I will question what needs to be questioned in a calm and respectful manner.

Gentle in that …
I am an active listener / questioner with a view to gaining wisdom.
I am a learner.
I am calm under pressure.
I always endeavour to treat with people with respect and dignity.

What is your favourite piece of leadership advice, or quote?

In any organisation it is the people who comprise it that must always matter most. As soon as we place ‘product’ above ‘people’ we have lost sight of really matters.

What does success look like with a client?

My clients see that I am their most valuable business partner. They know that I am willing and able to support them in whatever circumstance that presents and that my client’s business will be better because of the partnership they have with Leading Teams and me.

Tell us about your culture and leadership experience?

As noted earlier, having worked in eight different school settings in the Catholic education sector across Victoria I have had the good fortune to learn from and with many outstanding leaders. This, coupled with many and varied interactions in local sporting clubs and other settings has allowed me to form a deep appreciation of what effective leadership looks like, sounds like and feels like.
Without doubt the two most pivotal leadership roles I have enjoyed were as Principal at St. Alipius Parish School, Ballarat East and as the founding Principal of Emmaus Catholic Primary School, Mt Clear. Starting a school from ground up was truly unique, demanding and deeply rewarding opportunity.
I look forward to forming a diverse client base as I settle into Leading Teams and sharing my rich experience in the leadership of people as I do so.

There is a school of thought that expresses that each of us having an individual purpose can be, and sometimes is, counter-productive to strong team-wide alignment to the common purpose of the organisation.  If we work on the premise that our common purpose provides us with the deeper ‘why’ we do what we do, I am of […]

Hearing the often overwhelming stories being shared about the inimitable Archie Roach in recent days has caused me to consider the crucial place that “story” plays in all of our lives and organisations. In Archie Roach’s superb autobiography, “Tell Me Why,” he talks about the work he and inspirational Indigenous elder, Jack Charles undertook with […]

In his book, “The Element” the late and truly brilliant educator, author, speaker and leader, Sir Ken Robinson wrote a rather bemusing story about Paul McCartney’s education. McCartney was a student at the Liverpool Institute and despite his prodigious talent and his love of music he never enjoyed music lessons at school.
